Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Stanley Ka Dabba

I have never written posts in any other language except English, and so today’s topic must have surprised some of my regular readers.

I just saw this Indian film “STANLEY KA DABBA”, which means “STANLEY’s TIFFIN BOX”.

It is about a boy who is pretty intelligent and talented. However, he is an orphan(which is disclosed as the end approaches) and works in his uncle’s hotel all night long. At day time, he studies in an all-boys school. Every boy in his class bring delicious lunches in their “dabbas” or “tiffin boxes” while Stanley can not afford them. It’s a sad story which made me cry a lot of times! And so did my siblings including my youngest 8-year-old bro cried!!

One horrible teacher of Stanley who forces children to share their lunch with him, once gets angry at Stan and threatens him that he won’t be allowed to come to school without his tiffin box! (I wonder if such horrible people exist.)

However, in the end, Stanley’s co-worker and best friend manages to fill his tiffin box with all the left-outs of the hotel and when Stanley shares them with his classmates and teachers, everybody gets stunned. His “Kharoos”(as he is called in the film) teacher feels pretty embarrassed at his behaviour and leaves school. And Stanley never tells anybody why he never brought lunch. No one knows the life he lives and he always pretends that he is very contented and that his mother prepares all those delicious foods for him..

PLOT AS DESCRIBED BY WIKIPEDIA:

Stanley is a fourth grader who is very popular amongst his friends. He is talented and is liked by his teachers. However, he never brings his lunch box or ‘dabba‘. ‘Khadoos’, as he is popularly called, is a Hindi teacher who does not bring his own dabba but likes to eat others’ lunch. Stanley’s friends share their lunch with him by hiding from Khadoos. Khadoos eventually finds them on the terrace and warns Stanley to bring his own lunch or stop coming to school. Stanley misses school for a few days and his absence is felt by his teachers and school mates. One fine day, Stanley brings his dabba packed with mouth-watering items for Khadoos. Khadoos realises his mistake and quits the school. Stanley’s performance in an inter-school festival is appreciated by everybody. Towards the end, the reason for Stanley’s lack of a dabba is revealed.

Anupama Chopra of NDTV said – “I recommend that you make time for the film. It has an inherent sweetness and honesty that will stay with you long after the film is over”

I think the guy Partho Gupte (as Stanley Fernandez) did a very good job, and the story holds a very good, universal moral. Should be seen by all.

Do do see this website www.stanleykadabba.com. I just did. Its FANTASTIC. You will know all about the film once you see this.
