Because she said it was raining.

Mae dosry shehar me rehti hun
Mae tum jesi ho hi nahi sakti
Mera karna dharna mery rasm o riwaj
Mera dharam bharam mera kappra libaas
Kbhe tum jesa ye ho nhi sakta.
Mae jeeti alag hun marti alag hun
Khati alag hun peeti alag hun
Tmhary shehar me baarish hoti hogi
Meray shehar me sirf khoon hy barasta
Meray shehar me aag hae jalti
Meray shehar me lashein haen girti
Tum apny shehar ki baarish ko
Kuch waqt yahan kia bhej nhi sakteen?

rain

Written for Mahwi, and one other friend.

She said it was raining. I told her it wasn’t. She complained that we live in the same city. So I wrote to her that. So yes, we live in the same city. But you see, each of us lives in a city of their own – or perhaps a world of their own: unique and personal.

That’s one meaning to it. The other is in reference to someone who really doesn’t live in the same city – or country.

Apologies to those who couldn’t understand the Urdu-English text above and found it nothing more than a bibbery-a-bibbery-boo! (If possible, I’ll post a translation someday soon.)

Bhale alag ho rasm o riwaaz
Ek hi hoti hai dil ki aawaaz
Alag ho bhaasha, alag ho dhang
Alag nahin hai khoon ka rang
To kyun samajhti hai khud ko alag
Jab ek hi aag rahi dil mein sulag?

Haan barasta hai yahan baadal se paani
Par yahan har boond ki hai alag kahaani
Khushi se naachti hai ye boondein dharti ki god mein
Zindagi ka paigaam le daurti har daal mein
Par kabhi rote hue ke gham ko dhakti hain ye boondein
Aur kabhi ishwar ke aanshoo ban tapakti hain ye boondein

Kya tujhe aisi hi baarish mein hai nahana?
Khushi se hai naachna, ya gham ko hai chhupana?

Okay Arindam. Now that’s something I can not reply to! I won’t thank, I won’t say anything at all. But I’d still expect you to know how much it meant to me. That is, how much every single word meant to me!

          • Arindam Saha says:

So come along the path O sister!
            Come along through heart’s way
I will be waiting in the rain
            Come along your heart’s sway

And then together we will just wander
With the breeze; in the rains
We will laugh our hearts out
Free the emotions bound in chains

And then O sister! We would just stand
Just to hear a falling drop
The tiny drop of mighty rain
Meeting its destiny and brought to stop

You may then cry; and cry aloud
As none but me would see your tears
The sound of thunder would mask your sound
And drops of rain would hide your fears

We would thus laugh and cry in rain
And journey through loss and gain
Pain will reach ecstasy, ecstasy will cross pain.
Tears will collide with laughter and we will go insane.

            Love it!

I will come, and you will see
So we’ll rejoice and dance with glee!

None but us, just me and he
To world will we say goodbye and flee.

            ๐Ÿ™‚

            One sentence in one word…

          • Arindam Saha says:

๐Ÿ™‚ You won’t find its translation in google… It’s too complicated for it to translate ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ˜‰
For pronunciation sake, the word can be broken down as
            Anaarya-justam-aswargyam-akeerti-karam-arjuna

            Literal translation goes as

“O Arjuna! This is an act of cowards; an act that denies you heavens and an act that spreads ill fame.”

(You see… One sentence in one word :))

This is a line taken from a couplet of Gita. So to understand its complete meaning some background is required… Do you know of Gita or Mahabharata?

          • Arindam Saha says:

            ‘Who’ nahin ‘What’…
Requires long explanation… Abhi mobile se utna nahin likh paaunga… Do char din baad batata hoon jab mere pass laptop pe net hoga…

          • Arindam Saha says:

Okay so Mahabharata is an epic of Hindu mythology. It is basically a story of a war within a royal family for kingdom…

The whole family gets divided (due to very interesting and complicated reasons) into two sides ready to take each other’s life in the battlefield of Kurukshetra (near modern day Delhi).

Ultimately a fierce battle is fought. Bothe sides face severe losses. But overall the ‘good’ people called ‘pandavas’ win over the bad peaple called ‘kauravas’.

Gita is a very small part of Mahabharata. It is the part when both armies are face to face in the battlefield and the war is about to start. At that moment Arjuna, a prime warrior of the Pandavas looks at the ‘enemies’ only to find his own family members, teachers, brothers etc. He is shattered thinking that he would have to kill his own family to win the battle. He reports his desire to throw down his arms and die in battle rather than kill his family to his friend Krishna.

Krishna then by amicably rationales Arjuna out of his dilemma and successfully persuades him to fight the war. The conversation deals with many different questions regarding life, death, duty, sadness, happiness etc. and their answers Gita is the conversation between Arjuna and Krishna.

The line that I quoted is part of first dialogue by Krishna. After listening to the reasons quoted by Arjuna on why he should not fight the war (which include the sin incurred by killing his own family, the love for the young, respect for elders and the fact that materialistic things like kingdom are irrelevant etc etc) Krishna starts off by saying that his arguments are wise but cowardly and should not be practiced…

Kuch samajh mein aaya? Maine world’s longest epic (Mahabharata) aur world’s shortest religious book (Gita) ko ek comment mein summarise kiya hai… ๐Ÿ˜›

          • randomlyabstract says:

            OMG this was interesting!
An act of cowardliness but sense of duty, love, family bond?
Both were wise in their own ways, as in Krishna and Arjuna. BUT sacrificing one’s family or friendship isn’t worth a kingdom, is it? Or that is that, puraani kahawat..?
Thank you for your timely explanation! ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • Arindam Saha says:

Well… that is why I say Hindu mythology sometimes amazes me ๐Ÿ˜‰ Kahani mein bahut saare twists hain… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Agar kabhi time mile aur religious reservations na ho to Mahabharata padhna (ya TV serial dekhna)… Just as a story… Guaranteed Maza aayega… This epic has no real hero and villein… And the story is awesome… makes you think… ๐Ÿ™‚
